PARALLEL STRAND LUMBER AND NORI (TOASTED SEAWEED) VENEER
20" × 16" × 19"
For Whole Foods Market, Columbus Circle, New York City. Design by Craig Grund and Mark Macek.
Craig's firm, Bottino Grund Architects, designs most of the Whole Foods Markets in the Eastern United States. The Columbus Circle location needed special seating around the fresh sushi bar. Craig loved the massiveness and durability of parallel strand lumber, normally used for beams and headers. The end grain is especially lush. We shaped the seat like a saddle and veneered the sides of the stools, like a sushi roll, with toasted seaweed.
